Patient Care
The primary rule for our service is simple—Care for your patients.
Patients remains your responsibility until they are either discharged or transferred to another service.
This means that you will be responsible for rounding, writing a note, writing orders under the supervision of the resident or attending, and participating in any procedures which they undergo.
If you know that for some reason you will be unavailable to fulfill those responsibilities, you MUST find someone else to cover them.
This will be part of your final evaluation, but more importantly, is a fundamental concept that underlies all medical care.

Patient Plans
Part of your evaluation comes from your interaction with patients.
As students you may sometimes feel caught between your team’s plan and the patient’s expectations.
It is also difficult because you may not have the requisite experience to predict the direction of the team’s plan.
If you do NOT understand the plan or why it is being made, more than likely the patient does not either.
It is important in this case to ask questions (in an appropriate manner and place).
The best students are able to bridge this gap.

Attitude
It is easy to discern students who are uninterested in their patients or their work.
Such students are not welcome on our service.
Even if your future plans do not involve obstetrics and gynecology, we expect you to commit to your current rotation.

Dress Code
Scrubs are recommended for most rotations on this service.
We request that the scrub tops and bottom match, not be overly tight, and be clean.
For those assigned to a outpatient clinic we recommend professional clothing (although scrubs are still acceptable.)
If there is a question as to whether one’s clothing is appropriate, please consult Joy Kimmell or Nicole Groote.

Gyn Exams
All students(male or female) must be proctored by a physician or NP.
With the exception of the Structured Nursing Experience a nurse may not serve as a proctor.

Charting
Part of your grade is based on your written H&Ps as well as progress notes.
For this reason medical students are NOT to use preprinted OB/Gyn H&Ps during this rotation.
Students should instead write out full notes on lined progress note paper.

Private
Patients
Some physicians are willing to have students involved in their patients’ care.
Ask your supervising resident or fellow for details with each patient.

Conflicts
Arguments/heated discussions MUST not take place in front of patient as this serves to weaken their trust in our care.
If you have a conflict with another person, it is important that you first try to resolve this in an open and direct manner.
If this is unsuccessful, the next step is to contact me Rshettigar@Seton.org

Hours
Ob/Gyn is one of the more demanding specialties.
We expect that you will perform your duties on time.
We expect that you will keep your pager close and reply to pages.
We expect that you will be willing to stay until your duty to your patients is complete.
If you are given permission to read or attend to another area of Ob/Gyn (eg. OR or AWH), make certain your supervising physician has your pager number.

Language
Be sensitive of the language you use;
examples of inappropriate language “I’m going to do your pap. Let me just stick it in...”
“Your vagina’s too huge for this speculum,”
“Are those breasts real?”
Something more appropriate “I will place the speculum”, “I will use a different speculum,” “Have you had any surgeries?”

Spanish
One of the benefits of rotating through Brackenridge is that you will have the opportunity to learn and practice the Spanish language. For those who are not fluent in Spanish, your main options are to use an available Translator phone/box or ask a Tech or Nurse to translate. Most students finish the clerkship able to perform a basic H&P in Spanish.

Sterile
Procedure
All students will have received a basic instruction in sterile procedure during their Surgery clerkship
or during orientation to this clerkship if they have not yet done surgery.
It is still not uncommon however for students to forget or err and you should only feel moderately embarrassed
if you are asked to regown or rescrub during a case.
